My Favorite Celebrity Wedding Dresses
Posted by Carly Dahlen , Apr, 2009 @ 1:23 pm
I’m obsessed with weddings. From the dresses, to the flowers, to the rings, I love all things matrimonial! After looking through countless In Style Weddings Issues, looking through infinite numbers of celeb wedding pictures on Google, and reflecting on my own tastes, I have chosen my top 5 celebrity wedding dresses:
#5: Jenna Bush, dress designed by Oscar de la Renta
It was nearly a year ago that the former first daughter married former White House aide Henry Hager in a relatively low-key Texas wedding. The pair wed at the family ranch in Crawford, Texas, before some 200 friends and relatives and in front of a simple limestone cross erected near a lake.
The Oscar de la Renta-designed dress featured organza with embroidery, matte beading and a small train. I love the dress because it maintains a balance between elegance and simplicity, and looks positively stunning on Ms. Bush’s petite, tan figure! I also like the dress because it bucks the strapless, satin trend that has become the norm for many high-profile brides.
#4: Talisa Soto, dress from off-the rack
Exactly 7 years ago today, Benjamin Bratt and his girlfriend of seven months, actress Talisa Soto, exchanged self-written vows on a grassy hillside overlooking the ocean in Bratt’s hometown of San Francisco (People.com).
The bride wore an off-the-rack, chiffon, empire-waist dress with a small shawl. I’m a HUGE fan of the empire waist; the silhouette created by the dress adds a dash of romance to an otherwise contemporary look. PLUS, empire waists are great for a last-minute, shotgun wedding!
#3: Portia de Rossi, dress designed by Zac Posen
In one of the most high-profile celebrity weddings of 2008, TV host Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia de Rossi wed at their home in Beverly Hills, California on August 16.
Though both women looked stunning in their Zac Posen ensembles, de Rossi stole the show in her ballerina-inspired, light pink dress. The combination of deep halter, backless top and full tulle skirt made for a stunningly sexy, elegant look.
#2: Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, dress designed by Ann Lowe
One of the most famously glamorous couples in history, John and Jackie Kennedy wed on September 12, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island. The wedding was considered the social event of the season with an estimated 700 guests at the ceremony and 900 at the lavish reception that followed at Hammersmith Farm.
Her wedding dress was created by designer Ann Lowe of New York City.
The gown, which required 2 months to complete, required 50 yards of ivory silk taffeta, and included interwoven tucking bands and tiny wax flowers on the skirt. I love the dress because of graceful silhouette created by the cap sleeves, portrait neckline, and full skirt. Pure elegance–pure Jackie!
The dress is now housed in the Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts (Wikipedia).
#1: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, dress designed by Narcisco Rodriguez
Like mother-in-law, like daughter-in-law, Carolyn Kennedy tops my list for the best wedding dress of all time!
John F. Kennedy Jr., and former Calvin Klein saleswoman Carolyn Bessette married on September 21, 1996 in a simple ceremony on Georgia’s Cumberland Island, with only 40 guests in attendance. The wedding was kept a secret, but the subsequent news of the nuptuals beamed around the world minutes after this photo was released. The lovely couple became instant icons of glamor and elegance, and their wedding photo set the tone for many fabulous fashion moments to come.
I love Carolyn’s dress because of the simplicity, elegance, and flattering shape. I wish bridal fashion would move away from the grandiose princess dresses and back to the chic shape of Bessette’s gown.
